Several rental terms use similar words but affect your booking differently. Separating deposits, payment holds, mileage limits and insurance excess makes it easier to compare offers accurately.

Security deposit or payment hold

A supplier may require a deposit or temporary payment hold under its rental terms. Check the amount, payment method, release process and any conditions shown by the supplier. Do not assume the timing is identical across companies or banks.

Mileage allowance

The mileage allowance is the distance included in the rental terms. It may be stated per day, per rental period or under another supplier rule. For longer routes, calculate whether the allowance matches your expected driving.

Excess-kilometre charge

If the agreement sets a mileage limit, it may also state a charge for each kilometre above that limit. Compare this before booking if you expect substantial driving.

Insurance excess or deductible

This is not the same as a security deposit. It relates to the amount that may remain payable under the insurance or damage-protection terms when the specified conditions apply.

Ask when a term is missing

If an important amount or rule is not disclosed in the offer, ask the rental company before confirmation and keep the final contract for reference.
