13 October is the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, and the 2026 theme is “Resilience Starts at Home”. For a traveller, readiness starts before moving the rental car: a deliberate go/no-go decision, an alternative route and a portable emergency kit.

What is the current global campaign?
The United Nations stresses that homes are the frontline of resilience and that early warnings and practical preparedness must reach everyone. Applied to a road trip, a car is not a guaranteed escape: roads may close or flood, and official instructions always take priority over the itinerary.
Run a go-or-postpone check
Review official weather, civil-defence and road alerts; confirm the destination, an alternative route and a contact point. Check fuel or charge, tyres, warning lights and the contract’s geographic limits. Postpone when authorities warn against travel, and never enter a closed road or moving water.
Pack a portable personal emergency kit
Carry water, a flashlight, phone cable and charged power bank, first aid, essential medicines stored as directed, and paper and offline copies of identification, the rental agreement and emergency numbers. Confirm the warning triangle and vest where legally required; never assume the rental kit is complete without checking.
Protect people before the car or itinerary
Follow evacuation instructions and official routes even when slower, and never drive through floodwater. If the car stops or is damaged, move to safety and call emergency services and the rental provider; do not repair or tow it yourself without approval. Share the route with a trusted contact.
