With the 2026–2027 school year underway, traffic around Dubai schools has returned to its busier pattern. On 1 September, Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority launched awareness programmes for students, parents and drivers, stressing lower-risk behaviour around schools: follow posted speed limits, avoid improper or double parking, do not overtake unsafely, and use designated pick-up and drop-off areas. For families considering a temporary rental car, the useful question is not simply “which car should we rent?” but “will a rental make the school routine safer and more practical?”

Why the first school weeks need extra planning

RTA notes that traffic volumes around schools typically rise during the first weeks of the academic year. In August, it also completed traffic improvements at six school-zone locations serving more than ten schools, including Al Barsha, Umm Al Sheif, Dubai Motor City, Dubai Studio City, Al Sufouh and Wadi Al Safa 4. Better road layouts help, but families still need realistic time buffers and calmer driving around school entrances.

When can a temporary family rental make sense?

• Your primary family car is being serviced: a short rental can keep school and work routines moving without committing to a second vehicle.
• A parent or relative is in Dubai temporarily: an extra car can help when school, work and activity schedules overlap.
• Your passenger load has increased: a larger category may be useful when the routine suddenly includes more children, bags or sports equipment.
• You are between homes or schools: flexible rental can bridge a temporary period until the new daily route settles.

If a school bus or public transport already handles the route efficiently, or the vehicle would remain parked almost all day, renting may add cost without enough practical benefit.

Choose around space and access, not appearance

For school runs, check child-seat space, luggage capacity, ease of getting in and out, fuel use and parking dimensions. A large SUV is not automatically the best answer; a mid-size sedan or crossover may provide enough room while being easier to park. If you use child seats, confirm compatibility before handover rather than discovering a fit issue on the first school morning.

Five practical pick-up and drop-off rules

1. Use the school’s designated drop-off and pick-up area; do not double-park for “just a minute”.
2. Build in extra time during the first weeks instead of trying to recover delays with speed or risky overtaking.
3. Watch carefully for pedestrian crossings, school buses and children moving between parked vehicles.
4. Know your exit route before you enter the school queue so you do not create sudden turns or stops.
5. If you have children at different schools, test the full route during peak time before making it your fixed routine.

What should you check in the rental terms?

A school routine can add more daily mileage than expected. Check mileage allowance, insurance and excess, Salik treatment, fuel policy, delivery and collection fees, and who is authorised to drive. If both parents will use the vehicle, confirm whether an additional driver must be registered with the rental company.

Compare the cost across a real school week

Do not compare only the headline daily price. Estimate five school days, extra errands, fuel, parking, Salik and any delivery charges. In some cases a weekly or monthly rental can cost less than repeatedly extending a daily booking, but that depends on each supplier’s mileage and rental conditions.
