International Archaeology Day 2026 falls on Saturday, 17 October. Before driving a rental car to an archaeological site, verify access, prepare the route and protect the place you came to see.

Confirm the site is open and find the correct entrance
Hours, reservations and last entry vary by site and season. Check the official authority on the morning of travel, reserve a tour if required and do not assume a map pin leads to the visitor gate.
Prepare the car and route
Check fuel or charge and tyres, download an offline map and carry water. Stay within the rental agreement and never take an unpaved or closed road unless both the contract and site authority allow it.
Park in the designated area and continue on foot
Use the official car park, not a narrow shoulder or archaeologically sensitive ground. Follow visitor paths and barriers. Ask about accessible routes in advance if anyone in the group needs step-free access.
Leave the site exactly as you found it
Do not dig, touch rock art, climb walls, move stones or remove fragments. Leave metal detectors at home where rules prohibit them, and report damage to staff rather than trying to repair it.
