The International Day of Rural Women is on 15 October, during the 2026 International Year of the Woman Farmer. Travellers can support rural livelihoods in practical ways by planning a safe route, buying locally, and respecting farm and community access.

Plan the route before phone signal disappears
The National Park Service advises researching weather, closures, and amenities in advance and making a backup plan; a phone is not a substitute for emergency essentials and coverage may be unavailable.
Match the car and contract to the road surface
Confirm whether roads are paved and what the rental contract permits; never take an unsuitable car onto an unsealed route. Mark fuel or charging stops, download maps, carry water and a power bank, and share your route and return time.
Drive for rural-road realities
Slow before bends and hidden junctions, and expect pedestrians, cyclists, livestock, farm vehicles, or mud. Be able to stop within the visible clear distance and use passing places according to local rules.
Park and spend with respect
Never block a gate, driveway, or emergency route, and follow marked roads and signs. Buy from local women-led farms and shops where it is safe and lawful, ask before photographing people or property, and take waste away.
