World Food Day is on 16 October 2026 under the theme “Innovate today. Nourish tomorrow.” On a road trip, reducing waste and protecting food starts with a clear cooling and loading plan before groceries enter the rental car.

Why do time and temperature matter in a car?
USDA says bacteria grow quickly between about 4°C and 60°C. Do not leave perishable food unrefrigerated for more than two hours, or more than one hour when the temperature is above 32°C.
Make the cooler part of the trip equipment
Pre-chill food and use ice or frozen packs plus a thermometer to keep it at 4°C or below. Seal raw meat away from ready-to-eat food, and consider a separate drinks cooler if it will be opened often.
Load food without compromising safety
Secure closed containers and the cooler so they cannot tip, and do not block rear visibility or airbags with loose items. Keep the cooler shut and out of direct sun, and clean spills according to the rental company’s instructions.
Schedule shopping and stops by the clock
Buy chilled and frozen products last and drive directly to the accommodation or picnic. Track when food leaves refrigeration, never rely on air conditioning in a parked car, and discard food when its safe temperature is uncertain.
