World Spine Day falls on 16 October, and the 2026 theme is “Spine Health for Life.” Choosing the car, setting the seat, planning breaks and loading luggage carefully can make a long rental-car journey more comfortable and safer.

Choose a car your body can use comfortably
Do not rely on the category name alone. Check entry height, door opening, seat and steering adjustment, lumbar support and the boot lip. If mobility is limited, request the actual vehicle specifications or a suitable category before confirming.
Set the driving position before moving
Sit fully back and adjust the backrest to support the trunk up to the shoulders. Keep the knees slightly bent and reach the pedals and wheel without stretching. Set the head restraint, then the mirrors and seat belt after the seat position is fixed.
Break up long periods of sitting
Occupational-safety guidance recommends a short break after about each hour of prolonged driving. Stop legally and safely, walk briefly and change position; never stretch or use a phone while the car is moving. Persistent pain or numbness is a reason to stop and seek professional advice.
Lift and load luggage more intelligently
Use wheeled bags and split a large load. Stand close, bend the knees and lift with the legs while keeping the bag near the body; do not twist the back. Ask for help with heavy items and secure luggage so it cannot move inside the car.
