Global Handwashing Day is on 15 October 2026 under the continuing theme “Be a Handwashing Hero!” Travel days include shared doors, payment terminals, fuel pumps or chargers, and rest stops; a useful hygiene plan starts with hands, not an attempt to sterilise the whole car.

Clean hands matter more than a “sterile car”
CDC says clean running water and soap are the best option. When they are unavailable, use sanitiser with at least 60% alcohol, knowing that it is less effective on visibly dirty or greasy hands and does not remove every type of germ.
Plan handwashing around travel moments
Wash before eating; after the restroom, a fuel pump, charger, or payment terminal; and after helping a child or cleaning a spill. Use clean running water and soap, then dry with a clean towel or air.
Carry sanitiser and use it safely
Choose a sealed small bottle labelled at least 60% alcohol, apply enough, and rub until hands are dry. Keep it away from heat, flames, and children, and never apply it while fuelling or near an ignition source.
Clean the rental car without damaging it
Start with clean hands. Do not spray liquid directly onto the steering wheel, screens, or controls, and do not mix cleaning products. Follow the rental company and manufacturer instructions, and report a spill instead of testing a product that may damage a surface.
