World Sight Day falls on 8 October 2026, with the global campaign asking everyone to prioritise eye health through Love Your Eyes. For a traveller renting a car, that message becomes practical: make sure you can clearly see the road, instruments and mirrors before accepting any night driving.

Why is this trending today?
IAPB says the 2026 campaign centres people’s stories and community action and aims for five million eye-care pledges. Safety guidance notes that glare, lane markings and signs can be harder to see at dawn, dusk and night; wear a current prescription and never use dark sunglasses or tinted lenses at night.
Check your sight and the car at pickup
Try to collect the car in daylight. Clean the windscreen and mirrors inside and out, then test low and high beams, indicators, wipers and the demister. Set the seat, mirrors and instrument brightness before moving, and report a weak lamp to the rental company instead of accepting the vehicle as-is.
Drive safely after dark
Reduce speed and leave more following distance, and look toward the lower right edge of the road instead of staring at oncoming lamps. Use high beams only when the road permits without dazzling others. Stop somewhere safe if your eyes become tired or signs and lane lines are no longer clear.
When should someone else drive?
If you have severe glare, blurred vision, headache or difficulty reading signs, do not turn the rental trip into a test of your ability. Choose a qualified additional driver who is added to the contract, or use a taxi, and arrange a professional eye check. This is general safety information, not a medical diagnosis.
